ANSI 207 Public Safety Vests – Keeping Up to the Latest Codes

Friday, April 30th, 2010

There is a certain standard that all safety vests must adhere to, in terms of visibility and practicality. While the old standard was known as ANSI 107, this updated version has a number of benefits that can be applied to the safety level of all workers, be they emergency medical responders or police officers. The ANSI 207 public safety vests stand out for a number of reasons; including their safety features, their durable materials, and their attention to detail. This does not apply to the safety vests worn by construction or utility workers, but more to those for emergency relief workers who have specific concerns that other workers may not have.

While the old ANSI 107 classification system had three different levels of protection, the new ANSI 207 public safety vests only come in one protection level. One could say that they are all at the highest level of protection as a result. A problem that many police officers or emergency medical relief workers alike had with the old types of safety vests was that they were excessively bulky and made it difficult to access their equipment or medical gear quickly and safely enough.

The new ANSI 207 public safety vests are designed with a more minimal design, without sacrificing safety. With a combination of reflective materials and high visibility fabric in the background, they help ensure that workers are visible by traffic, other responders, or anyone else who needs to take note of their whereabouts, without hindering movement or safety. This is a way to combine all the best traits of the old design and put it into something new and highly wearable.

Although the old certification system applied not only to safety vests but also to jackets, shirts, and pants, this new design is specifically for safety vests only. This focused design effort has helped make sure that the ANSI 207 public safety vests focus on the issues that were specifically a problem with the old safety models, including the fact that they were hindering police officers’ ability to reach their guns quickly in sometimes dangerous situations. Fortunately, that problem has now been fixed, and so the new ANSI 207 standards have been adopted and made mandatory in many states as a result. When there is an accident or crime scene, it’s essential that those life-saving first responders are able to do their job in the most effective way.

Safety Vests – Safety Vests Save Lives

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Safety vests are an old tradition among some professions.  Some of those professions are traffic cop, cross guard, and construction worker.  Many of today’s people who are using these vests of safety are those who are doing community service or other tasks.  Really, they are used by anyone who is going to be working somewhere that there could be danger. This enables them to be seen by everyone clearly and plainly.  This also helps for night time visibility since these vests are covered in reflective materials to help them stand out when a headlight is shined upon it.

Safety vests come in a variety of styles, colors, and functionalities.  First, let’s take a look at the various styles of these vests.  Some of them are longer or shorter, while others don’t have even one pocket on them.  Many of them do come with pockets.  Some are just general pockets with snaps, while others are made of Velcro closures and are designed for holding walkie talkies or other essential equipment.  The colors of these vests are integral too.  You will see colors of orange, yellow, green, and silver most of the time.  They have selected these colors for their bright, bold colors and often also so that when seen at night reflectively they are very bright then as well.

The functionality of these various safety vests is the most important thing besides their color reflective safety feature.  Many of them are designed to help carry necessary equipment.  For example, there might be a pocket designed the right size and shape for a portable radio.  Pockets are necessary for carrying essential equipment for the job at hand.  Although some people may not need to carry anything to do what they are doing, when you need to carry a radio or other professional equipment, it can be a lot easier than digging under the vest.

Safety vests are necessary for a number of public service jobs and even for volunteer or community service jobs.  Choosing a vest that doesn’t blend in with the scenery where the work will be done is a good choice. After all, the whole point of it being neon in color with reflective coatings is to be noticeable, and not to blend in.  Choose a vest that features what you need in terms of size, color, and functionality and you will be ready to tackle that job and do your very best.
